The very special tour with the opportunity to visit the Golden storerooms of the Hermitage

World famous is the Hermitage collection of Scythian antiquities VII–IV centuries BC, which made the finds made during the excavation of burial mounds in the Kuban, the Dnieper, the Crimea, held from XVIII to XX century.

It is believed that the nomadic tribes of the ancient Scythians formed their civilization in the eighth century BC. And for several centuries they occupied territories from the Black sea to China. The frozen layers of the earth in southern Siberia have preserved many artifacts in almost perfect condition. Among the exhibits there are even pieces of cheese, which is more than two thousand years.

The peculiarity of the Scythian collection is the abundance of monuments of decorative and applied art belonging to different artistic styles and directions. These are the works of the original Scythian so-called "animal" style, and things created for the nomadic nobility by Greek masters from the neighboring Scythians of the North black sea cities, and rare imported products of ancient Eastern craftsmanship.

Especially valuable in art and history section of the collection consists of jewelry made of precious metals – "Scythian" gold – monuments, executed in the mixed Greek-Scythian manner, in particular the masterpieces of ancient art from scenes in the Scythian steppe theme from "Royal" burial mounds of the fifth and fourth centuries BC. Among them there is a Golden crest from the barrow of Solokha, and precious vessels from the barrows of Kul-Both frequent, and a silver amphora from the Chertomlyk Mound with relief images depicting in the manner of "ethnographic realism" scenes from the life and mythology of the Scythians, their appearance, weapons, clothes. From the burial tombs of the Scythian leaders (with whom their wives, servants, squires, stables and horses were often buried) there are a variety of weapons, horse hats, household items, ceremonial utensils and jewelry.

The collection includes about 850 paintings, among which there are masterpieces of such great painters as Eugene Delacroix, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse.

The exposition is opened by the works of artists whose creative activity fell on the turn of the XVIII—XIX centuries. Works by G. Lettera, R. Lefebvre, K. True, A. Girodet, P. Chauvin, who was F. Gerard, P. Prudon, L. Boilly, A. Gros, D. Ingres and other masters allow you to understand what mood the French painting entered the new century. Romanticism, which was developed in the XIX century, is most clearly reflected in the paintings of E. Delacroix — "Moroccan, saddle horse" (1855) and "Lion hunt in Morocco" (1854).

Part of the exhibition is devoted to Barbizon painting, in its framework are paintings by T. Rousseau, F. Daubigny, J. Dupre and other artists who worked in the town of Barbizon. They gave the world a lot of amazing landscapes.

Painting of the turn of the XIX—XX century is represented by the works of many outstanding masters, including the founder of impressionism Claude Monet. In the Hermitage there are seven paintings by this great artist — "the Lady in the garden" (1867), "Waterloo Bridge" (1903), etc. Also noteworthy are paintings by O. Renoir, K. Pissaro, A. Sisley and E. Degas.

Another pride of the collection — paintings by P. Cezanne of different genres, "Tahitian" paintings by P. Gauguin, as well as some of the best works of V. van Gogh, including "Bush" (1889).

The idea of symbolism in French painting allows you to get a picture of E. Career, puvi de Chavannes, O. Redon and other artists. The collection could be considered complete without the paintings of the artists group "Nabi" (M. Denis, E. Vuillard, Bonnard, P., K. Russella etc.), and P. Signac, A. Russo, Marc A., K. van Dongen, A. Derain, M. Vlaminck, etc.

The Beginning of the XX century, represented in the General staff building of the Hermitage of the legendary paintings of Matisse and Picasso. The canvases of the first artist embody the traditions of Fauvism ("Red room", "Family portrait", "Dance" and "Music"), while the work of the second reflects the principles of cubism ("Dance with blankets", "Three women", "Woman with a fan").
